About Hakeem Olajuwon – American Basketball Player
Hakeem Olajuwon (in full Hakeem Abdul Olivajuwon), by name the Dream, was a Nigerian-born American professional basketball star who led the Houston Rockets to consecutive National Basketball Association championships in 1994, 1995.
Olajuwon had never played basketball before he was 15. Instead, he played team handball and association football in Lagos, Nigeria. After two years of learning the sport, Olajuwon was recruited by the University of Houston to play collegiate basketball. Houston reached the Final Four (national championship semifinals) in Olajuwon’s first season.
Houston lost to North Carolina State University in the final four, but he was still named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Houston advanced again to the NCAA tournament’s last game in 1984. Still, Olajuwon could not win the national championship as his team lost to Georgetown University, led by Patrick Ewing, a star player.
After his junior year, Olajuwon graduated from college and was picked by the Houston Rockets as the first pick in the 1984 NBA draft. In his first year, the Rockets made it to the playoffs. However, in his second year, they lost to the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals.
Although the Rockets did not advance past the first round in 1992 and 1987, Olajuwon’s play was impressive. This was due to his defensive prowess and incredible footwork, which were highlighted by his aggressive defense and quick feet on offense. The “Dream Shake” was his signature move. It consisted of feints and spins that he performed close to the basket. This often confused opposing defenders and gave Olajuwon an open shot.
In the mid-1990s, Olajuwon reached a high point in his career. He was the NBA’s Defensive Player-of-the-Year for the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons. In 1993-94, he was also the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). Olajuwon was awarded the finals MVP award for his MVP season, culminating in a seven-game win over the New York Knicks.
He was named finals MVP again the following year, leading the Rockets to their second championship. Injuries and old age caused his production to drop in the late 1990s. He was traded to Toronto Raptors in 2001, where he played just one season before retiring in 2002.
Olajuwon was 7th in the NBA in career points (26,946) and 11th in career rebound (13,748). He was also the league’s all-time leader in blocked shots (3830). Olajuwon, a 12-time All-Star, was named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players in 1996. He was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2008).
